I traveled to this wonderful wine making area of Bordeaux this past week. Here are some photos.

Tour de France

In Valencia I was close to the Southern stages of the tour de france. That is if you consider renting a car, driving 6 hours and spending money on gas and expensive tolls (but they have nice highways and rest stops) being close. I drove to Perpignan, had dinner, looked around and kept going to Trebes where the Limoux to Montpelier stage was going to be the next day. Here are a bunch of photos. The people watching, the commercialism, the fleet of cars, motorcycles, helicopters, police and support staff is unbelievable. The riders forming the pelloton (or pellet in english- used for drafting and strategy) are like a single organism when they fly by you. And that’s after you’ve waited hours for them to show up. Just a blip, but the single most bizarrely exhilarating sporting event I have ever seen.

I was standing near the side of the road next to a vineyard. The strange looking vehicles that went by us hucked all of that stuff that I took a couple of pictures of. You can see helicopters above the riders. The first five riders come through together then the pelloton comes through with a roar and as fast as a spit ball (a lot of them spit). Cars with their replacement bikes go by last. Then it’s just the empty road and the grapes.

More info on the stage…

A great write up of what to expect…(this was written about one of the climbs they do in the alps but I was in the countryside on a flat straightaway).
